About Anna and Gonzalo:
Fiddle player Anna Falkenau teams up with Asturian multi-instrumentalist Gonzalo Llao Diaz for a concert of crossing the musical – and really not-so-great (!) – divides between American old-time, Asturian and South Indian musics, with a nod at times to Irish traditional music for good measure. Both musicians bring a wealth of musical experience to the stage, connected by their deep respect for the various traditional musics they engage in and driven by an innate sense and desire to express themselves within and across these musical genres.
Anna Falkenau, who “lives and breathes a rich mix of American Old Timey, Irish traditional and … south Indian influences” (Siobhán Long, Irish Times) has released two critically acclaimed CDs, both receiving four-star reviews in The Irish Times. Anna’s album I Can Hear You Calling with five-string banjo player Lena Ullman brought her involvement with American Old-time music to the fore.
Music critic Alex Monaghan exclaiming that the album “raises the hairs on my neck at times, that primal edge on the fiddle particularly“ (Folkworld).
Siobhán Long describes her compositions as“beautifully quirky” and a “masterclass in imaginative playing” (Irish Times).
Anna has performed nationally and internationally, with artists such as Dolores Keane, John Faulkner, the late Tony Small, Nuala Kennedy, Grant Dermody, Holly Geraghty, Mary Shannon, and others and has contributed to John Faulkner’s latest album Storm in my Heart.
Gonzalo Llao Diaz is an exquisite Asturian bouzouki and fluteplayer, and singer of traditional Asturian songs, whose journey began with a foundation in early music, developing an interest in Asturian music before expanding his focus to the traditional music of Celtic nations. His dedication has shaped him into an eclectic musician with a broad perspective.

Anna Falkenau – “Soulful, Inventive and Infectious”
Fiddle player Anna Falkenau has some news!
Anna Falkenau (fiddle, viola), Nuala Kennedy (flute, vocals) & Cathal Ó Curráin (bouzouki, banjo, vocals) will perform in Galway’s oldest and most distinguished Irish traditional music venue, The Crane, Friday December 6, 2024.
The three musicians draw on a vast and deep well of musical material, bringing exceptional musicianship to their music, full of spontaneity, creativity and joi de vivre. Nuala and Anna met many moons ago in Scotland and enjoy their quirky yet precise attitude to music. “I love Cathal’s bouzouki playing,” says Anna, “and like Nuala, Cathal is also a really special singer, full of depth and emotion”. It will be a concert full of musical devilment as well as raw-bar musical moments.
Anna will also be in Kinvara for a Courthouse Concert, 1 February 2025, and on a short tour of Germany with Nuala Kennedy in June 2025 playing select historic concert venues of great beauty and exquisite acoustics.
Following doctoral research into Irish traditional music in 1960s and 1970s Galway, Anna enjoys the presentation of private and public lectures on Irish music, most recently at beautiful Lisdonagh House: a luncheon lecture, followed by a recital with Holly Geraghty (harp) and Anna Falkenau (fiddle), culminating in a concert with Anna Falkenau and Steph Geremia, Pádraic Keane (uilleann pipes), Cathal Ó Curráin (bouzouki, vocals, banjo), Freda Hatton (harp, concertina) and Paul Moran (sean-nós dancing, harmonica, lilting) – a day described by the celebrants as ‘magic’!
